Truly Open Technology

Freedom Software's Desktop Management technology is truly open. Any interested party is welcome to license this technology, use it, enhance it and/or resell it.

Opening this technology is consistent with the Open Systems philosophy followed by Freedom Software. Users benefit in many ways. Among them:

• Freedom of choice which empowers the user not the vendor. Users are able to buy the same technology from different vendors.
  
  
• Availability of a common desktop environment on all Unix platforms.
  
  
• Lower cost for the users due in part to a higher level of competition.

Freedom Desktop will be licensed based on the following licensing fees. The approach taken here is very similar to the one used by the Open Software Foundation with Motif 1.x.

• Source code - $1,000 for each CPU on which Freedom Desktop is used.
  
  
• Binary code (workstation version) - $40 for each executable copy of Freedom Desktop used or distributed.
  
  
• Binary code (Linux version) - write or call

For instance, if you decide to license 100 binary copies of Freedom Desktop for your institution (workstation version), the price would be $5,000. This is $1,000 dollars for the source code in addition to $4,000 (100 * $40) for 100 binary licenses.
